Taj Mahal. In the Indian city of Agra, there is a

 mausoleum made of ivory-white marble

 called the  For the purpose of housing Mumtaz Mahal's mausoleum, it was ordered in 1632 by Shah Jahan, the Mughal emperor who reigned from 1628 to 1658. The mausoleum is located in a formal garden and is enclosed by an unreinforced wall on three sides. It is the focal point of a 17-hectare (42-acre) complex that also contains a mosque and a guest house.

 


 Construction of the Mausoleum Although's was substantially finished in 1643, other project phases required a further 10 years of effort. According to estimates, the Taj Mahal complex cost about 32 million pounds, or about 52.8 billion (US7 million) in 2015, to build in its entirety in 1653. A board of architects chaired by Ustad Ahmed Lahauri, the emperor's court architect, oversaw the building project, which employed some 20,000 workers. 



In 1983, the Taj Mahal—"the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the most revered works of art in human history"—was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is regarded by many as the best illustration of Mughal architecture and a representation of India's lengthy history. 7-8 million people visit the Taj Mahal each year. The New 7 Wonders of the World (2000-2007) project named it the winner in 2007.
